Legalized Gambling
WHAT WILL EXPANDED GAMBLING
DO TO OUR COMMUNITIES?
CONGRATULATIONS!

Gaming lobbyists swarmed over Beacon Hill , but your voice was heard. The proponents of casino gambling withdrew their gaming amendment when they realized it did not have enough votes. This is a victory for healthy communities. But the casino proponents have already said they will try again next year. So we will remain vigilant.

THE DEBATE IN MASSACHUSETTS

Massachusetts Audubon Society letter

on environmental concerns

MCHC Op-Ed on Expanded Gambling

“Eminent domain has been used for a variety of public purposes, including urban renewal, so it would not be unusual as an extension of that philosophy,”– Sen. Michael Morrissey (D-Quincy)suggesting that eminent domain land taking should be allowed to take land for a casino

“Eminent domain is supposed to be used when potentially there are a limited number of individuals standing in the way of a major public good. This particular industry is among the most slippery and sleazy in the country. They need to be watched carefully. If we are going to do it in Massachusetts, we can’t do it from weakness and desperation because of a short-term budget crisis.”– Sen. Mark Montigny (D-New Bedford)

“People don’t realize that you can’t control it. . .It grows and grows and grows.”– Sen. Susan Tucker (D-Andover)

” It is an incredibly important issue that will change the social and economic fabric of this Commonwealth for many years.”– Sen Brian Joyce (D-Milton), in the Senate debate

” If you don’t get revenues through this vehicle then you are going to get them through taxes, the only other plausible alternative.”– Sen. Robert Havern (D-Arlington), explaining why he supported expanded gambling”

” If we don’t make any money on this, what are we doing this for?” – Rep. Dan Bosely (D-North Adams)

“When we put 50 machines in, I consider them 50 more mousetraps. You have to have a mousetrap to catch a mouse.”
&nbsp-; Bob Stupak, former Las Vegas casino owner

” Gambling has a huge history of destroying societies. If you look at the indices for social decay, widespread gambling historically, is one of the most reliable ones.”
&nbsp-; Ralph Nader, before the Baltimore-Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church, July 13, 1998:
